The natural lens in our eye allows us to focus over a wide range of distances. We are sometimes born with eyes that have too much or too little focusing power, and this can leave us nearsighted (myopia), or farsighted (hyperopia).

As if that is not enough, as we get older sometimes we have problems not only seeing far away, but also up close (presbyopia). When we have problems with both distance and reading vision, laser vision correction alone will not get us out of glasses. No matter how well we see off in the distance, we will gradually lose the ability to focus up close as we get older. This process is called presbyopia. This is caused by a combination of changes in the lens itself, as well as a gradual weakening of our focusing muscles. When this happens reading glasses or bifocals may become necessary.

At Skyvision Centers, Dr. White has been one of the leaders in Cleveland and northeast Ohio in performing a surgery known as PRELEX (presbyopic lens exchange), or natural lens replacement surgery. By removing your natural lens replacing it with a new, clear, plastic implant you can become less dependent on glasses for all of your vision needs, both distance and up close.

Natural Lens Replacement is for people who:
  • want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses for both distance and near vision.
  • may not be a good candidate for Laser Vision Correction
  • have no health issues affecting their eyes
As part of your vision difficulties, you may also have astigmatism. In certain cases we can perform Astigmatic Control during the natural lens replacement. At other times, laser vision correction with LASIK or PRK might be necessary. Your Skyvision Center doctor will discuss this with you.

The decision to have natural lens replacement surgery is an important one that only YOU can make. The goal is to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses for both reading and distance vision. Natural lens replacement is not for everyone, and no one can guarantee that natural lens replacement surgery will completely eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses for everyone.

At Skyvision Centers we will work with you to develop the best strategy for meeting your personal vision goals!
