The natural lens in our eye allows us to focus over a wide range of distances. We are sometimes born with eyes that have too much or too little focusing power, leaving us nearsighted (myopia), or farsighted (hyperopia).

No matter what our distance vision may be, we gradually lose the ability to focus up close as we get older (presbyopia). The natural lens starts to become stiff, and the ciliary muscle (focusing muscle) starts to lose its ability to focus the lens: At this stage of our lives, reading glasses or bifocals may become necessary.

No matter how old you may be, Natural Lens Replacement surgery or PRELEX (Presbyopic Lens Exchange) can help to solve some or all of these problems. Natural Lens Replacement is for people who:
  • want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • may not be a good candidate for Laser Vision Correction
  • have no health issues affecting their eyes
As a part of your vision difficulties, you may also have astigmatism. Astigmatic Control is an important part of Natural Lens Replacement and is included, if necessary, at no extra cost.

The decision to have Natural Lens Replacement Surgery is an important one that only you can make. The goal is to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. NLRS cannot eliminate glasses for everyone, nor can it give you "perfect vision". We cannot guarantee that you will have the results you desire.

We work with you to develop the best strategy for meeting your goals.
