LASIK has become the most popular choice for people who wish to correct their vision and become less dependent on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) uses a laser to change the shape of the cornea, the window to the eye. LASIK can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK has become a treatment of choice for many patients because they recover quickly and have few side effects and complications. In fact, most LASIK patients notice an improvement in their vision right when they sit up after the surgery!
An instrument called a microkeratome is used to create a hinged flap of thin corneal tissue. Your surgeon gently folds the flap away from the center of your cornea. The excimer laser is programed with your personal vision correction information. The laser is then used to reshape your cornea to correct your vision. Nearsightedness or myopia is treated by making the center of the cornea flatter. Farsightedness or hyperopia is treated by removing corneal tissue outside of the central optical zone. Astigmatism is treated by making the corneal shape more like a basketball than a football. Your surgeon will then replace your corneal flap in its original position, and the surgery is complete! Most patients opt to have both eyes done at the same time.
