The medical economic changes in medicine in general have not been kind to private practice medicine. Reimbursements for all services have generally declined over the past 15 years. The combination of high educational debt and changed attitudes toward the practice of medicine have made it very difficult to add young doctors as partners to private practices. The secondary market for selling a private practice has largely disappeared. These two factors have made it very difficult for senior doctors, the doctors who have invested large amounts of capital and "sweat equity" into their practice, to realize any return on their professional life's investment.
Eye care has an additional challenge. For the past two decades or so the relationship between ophthalmology and optometry has become increasingly strained. What was once a very congenial relationship has turned in many cases into a "turf war". Each Skyvision Center is specifically set up to enhance the relationship between optometrists and ophthalmologists by allowing both groups to work to their greatest potential. Ophthalmologists and optometrists to become true equity partners in a Skyvision Center, uniquely positioned to benefit and profit from each other's strengths.
The Skyvision Centers concept builds upon this partnership. On the "front-end," young doctors enter the partnership in a manner that provides security without forcing them to add to their debt load. On the "back end," senior equity partners, both ophthalmologists and optometrists, are guaranteed a buyout based on their production over the course of their career. Core strategies are also in place to ensure that founding partners are able to be rewarded for the seed capital that they have invested prior to becoming a Skyvision Center.
